Feed Our Vets mission is to help Veterans in the United States, their spouses and children, whose circumstances have left them on the battlefield of hunger, and to involve the public in fighting Veteran hunger, through: (1) Community food pantries that provide regular, free food to Veterans and their families, (2) Distribution of related goods and services, (3) Public education and outreach.

Did you know that 65 percent of all children in the United States live in a home that receives aid from the federal government?  We live at a time when child poverty in America is exploding.

Yes, the U.S. economy is experiencing a temporary bubble of false stability for the moment, but even during this period of false stability the gap between the wealthy and the poor continues to rapidly expand and the middle class is being systematically destroyed.  And, sadly, this is having a disproportionate impact on children.

This is happening for a couple of reasons.

First of all, poorer households tend to have more children than wealthier households.  Secondly, most people tend to have children when they are in their young adult years, and right now young adults are being absolutely hammered by this economy.  As a result, things just continue to get even worse for children living in this country.  Here are 14 facts that show that the number of children in America living in poverty this Christmas is at an all-time record high…

In addition to all of these numbers, there is also a lot of anecdotal evidence that families with children are really struggling right now.

For example, McDonald’s has traditionally been a place where poor and middle class families have taken their children for a cheap meal.  But the restaurant chain just released the worst sales numbers that we have seen in more than a decade.

And the really bad news is that this is just the beginning of the economic pain for families with children.  The U.S. economy is in a bubble period right now, and the authorities have been trying with all of their might to keep the bubble inflated.

Just imagine a bodybuilder that is pressing with all of his might to do one more rep on the bench press.  That is essentially where we are at.  In a recent piece, Brian Pretti summarized some of the extraordinary measures that global central banks have taken to keep the economic bubble inflated…

Since early 2009, central banks globally have printed more than $13 trillion. In addition, governments across the planet have increased their borrowings at historic proportions (the US just crossed $18T – another new high!), all in an effort to stimulate economies and avoid deflationary pressures. Total US Federal debt has more than doubled in five years, an increase of $9.5 trillion and counting.
Despite all of these efforts, the best that we have achieved is economic stagnation.

And now it is becoming clear that the overwhelming deflationary forces around the globe are starting to win the battle.  The central banks have used up their ammunition and they still have not turned things around.  In fact, as Ambrose Evans-Pritchard so eloquently put it recently, what we see all around us is “evidence of a 1930s-style depression, albeit one that is still contained”…

What is clear is that the world has become addicted to central bank stimulus. Bank of America said 56pc of global GDP is currently supported by zero interest rates, and so are 83pc of the free-floating equities on global bourses. Half of all government bonds in the world yield less that 1pc. Roughly 1.4bn people are experiencing negative rates in one form or another.

These are astonishing figures, evidence of a 1930s-style depression, albeit one that is still contained. Nobody knows what will happen as the Fed tries to break out of the stimulus trap, including Fed officials themselves.
But will it still be contained once the next major financial crash strikes?

We always hear that life was easier when we were younger.  All we thought of was play and  fun. But as we grow older, our life seems to be more complex, problematic, and pressure-packed.

But how is it that when we are at a stage where we are more mature and aware of what we want, the life we want eludes us?  In reality though, life has always been simple. Each of us is entitled and possesses the right to joyful living. The only problem is that we make a big deal out of every challenge we encounter, thus making life seem to be more complicated than it is.

In order to create a simpler and more elegant lifestyle, we have to slow it down a bit. Life runs so fast that it seems like we feel the need to chase it.   On the other hand, there’s actually no need to. Remember that you have the control over it, which means that you can always dictate the tempo.  Thus, in order to allow a rather joyful and more elegant lifestyle, consider these 11 ways of slowing down:

1. Purchase your needs with cash. Most people don’t realize it but credit cards are making their lives more complicated. With a simple piece of plastic on their hands, they can easily and conveniently buy anything they wish for and eventually ending up regretting their actions come month’s end. But with cash on hand, you have no choice but to stop shopping when your pockets are empty.

2. Keep your health in check. Living a simpler and more elegant lifestyle isn’t possible without good health. If you want to make things simple, do not compromise your health for worldly desires such as substance addiction and bad food. Keep fit. Exercise daily!

3. Avoid reading the minds and actions of other people. Life is complicated because we often make it that way. Good and honest communication with other people is the key if you want to keep it simple. Sometimes we create conflict and disagreements with others because we tend to see and read them incorrectly.

4. Wake up early. Life is always a rush when you wake up late. It’s a common scenario seeing people skip breakfast in order to rush to the office or work. As a result, you end up messing up your day simply because you failed to wake up early. A simple cure… go to bed a little earlier and get the proper sleep your body needs. Depriving your body of sleep can lead to ill health.

5. Get rid of the things that clutter your space. While many things in your home are full of sentimental value, they are also the reason why you feel so congested. Live a more graceful lifestyle by arranging your space and organizing everything. In general, get a fresher, simpler environment around you.

6. Keep your honesty intact. Being simple and elegant means being honest. Complicated lives are aggravated when people lie. We fail to see the beauty in life if we always resort to lying as a way to escape things.

7. Get rid of jealousy as well. Jealous people are also those who live ugly lives. Creating a simple and more elegant lifestyle requires loyalty and trust to the people around you. Thus, don’t build the mentality of always being jealous especially when there’s no reason to.

8. You don’t have to serve and please everyone. If you are a person who loves to follow than to lead, one of your probable weaknesses is you are always a subject of other people’s command. Put in mind that you’re the boss of your own life and you really don’t need to spend all of your time in this world in trying to impress everyone. For once in your life, learn to be selfish. Live your life.

9. Cook your own food. Fast-food chains serving preserved and modified  foods are part of daily life. As a result, we also tend to believe that life is similar—instant and fast. But if you spend time cooking your own dinner or preparing your own breakfast, you get the feeling of going back to a simpler life. You feel more satisfied and with a very minimal effort and time needed and you’re also putting yourself into better health.

10. Love anything that’s worth it. Love makes your world run smoothly. Maintain an atmosphere of love and prevent hate and anger. There is no reason to complicate and cause difficulties in your life.

11. Emphasize beauty. Life is beautiful and there is no better way to see it that way than noticing all the good things life has to offer. Remember that an elegant lifestyle does not really mean having all the opportunities, chances, and wealth. It is all about making the most out of everything you have.

While serving overseas, a group of US soldiers visited Dachau Concentration Camp, where untold thousands of innocent people were murdered.

Many were worked to death; many starved; many were tortured; many died of exposure; many were used for target practice; many were herded together and mowed down with machine guns; many asphyxiated in gas chambers. Bodies were cremated or dumped in mass graves and covered with bulldozers.

Life-size murals showed prisoners being tortured, while sadistic, laughing SS officers watched. Instruments of torture, such as barbed-wire riding quirts and sharp-pointed goads, were displayed. Barracks contained wooden, coverless cots stacked from floor to ceiling. Dachau is the ultimate definition of man’s inhumanity to man.

Recently, I found a Christmas story filed away years ago that rekindled memories of Dachau.

A preacher and his wife were establishing a church in a dangerous metropolitan area. Funds were limited, so they chose a rundown building for their church. After renovating the interior, they announced that the first service would be held on the following Sunday, a few days before Christmas.

Unfortunately, a storm shook loose a large chunk of plaster from the wall behind the pulpit. Knowing he didn’t have time to repair it, the preacher searched for something to cover the gaping hole.

On a whim, he stopped at a flea market, and found what could cover the hole temporarily: a hand-sewn comforter with a large cross in its center.

Upon reaching his church, he noticed an old lady who had missed a bus, and invited her to come in where it was warm. Then he placed the comforter over the hole; it fit perfectly.

“Where did you get that comforter?” the old lady gasped. When he told her, she explained that she had sewn it for her husband many years ago. The preacher offered to give it to her.

“Oh, no, it will serve a far better purpose where you have it.”

To express his gratitude, he drove her home. On the way, she explained that in 1938, when Hitler annexed Austria, she was allowed to leave the country, but that her husband was taken prisoner. They never saw each other again.

After the preacher’s first sermon, an old man came forward and asked him where he had gotten the comforter. He told the preacher that his wife had sewn it for him, but he had not seen or heard from her in a half century. All he knew was that she fled to America. He never stopped loving her, and had to find out if she was alive, or where she was buried.

The preacher exclaimed, “Sir, you are about to receive one of the greatest Christmas gifts of your life.”

He drove to the lady’s home, and told the man to knock on the door. When it opened, a man and his wife, whose love for each other the evils of Nazism could never destroy, embraced and wept for joy.

On Christmas day, the preacher brought them a gift: the comforter.

Reading through the latest report from the National Coalition for the Homeless might spark one of those moments when you wonder, what would Marie Antoinette say? French peasants who had no bread to eat were so enraged by rumors that their queen uttered the phrase “Let them eat cake” that she ended up decapitated. Well, the coalition’s modern-day researchers found that since January 2013, 21 cities have restricted or flat-out banned feeding the homeless at all—and 10 municipalities have similar ordinances in the works.http://nationalhomeless.org/wp-content/uploads/2014/10/Food-Sharing2014.pdf

At the heart of the bans and restrictions, write the authors, is the misguided belief that feeding people who are sleeping on the streets or in shelters encourages homelessness. Apparently, some of our nation’s politicians and policy makers are convinced that thousands of Americans are so eager for a free bowl from a soup kitchen that they’ll quit their jobs and begin sleeping in doorways and on bus benches to get it.http://www.takepart.com/article/2014/06/27/these-awesome-bus-benches-double-homeless-housing-purpose

According to the report, a consultant on homelessness named Robert Marbut visited more than 60 communities in 2013 and 2014, giving talks about how dishing out hot meals to homeless people enables them to remain homeless.

“If you feed people in parks or on a street, or drive your car up and give 14 meals out of the back of your car, all you’re doing is growing homelessness,” Marbut said in one speech, according to the report. “If you want to dramatically change how [a city] deals with the homeless, align your feeding with all the holistic services. And the only place people should ever be fed is where you’re in a 24/7 program that’s holistic that deals with all the issues.”

In contrast, the coalition’s researchers note that programs that provide people with meals are often “the only way some homeless individuals will have access to healthy, safe food on a given day.” They go on to clarify that people become or remain homeless because of “lack of affordable housing, lack of job opportunity, mental health or physical disability”—not because someone’s giving them a plate of chicken.

Bans and restrictions on feeding folks who live on the streets are just one example of the draconian laws being passed nationwide to criminalize homelessness. Providing people with a place to live—whether it’s a tiny house like the ones being built in Austin, Texas, and Portland, Ore., or a small unit in an apartment building, as has been done in Charlotte, N.C.—and connecting them to those holistic services is what’s been proved to alleviate homelessness.

The coalition also recommends adding homeless people to antidiscrimination laws, which could protect them from punitive bans. But as long as elected officials and policy makers continue to try to drive away people on the street instead of helping them, these kinds of restrictions are likely to keep popping up. Unless, of course, Americans have a Marie Antoinette moment and decide that enough is enough with crushing folks who need help the most—no decapitation required.

Since founding veterans Project in early 2013,Mr Barber has taken on the overall operation of Veterans Project Social Services Program including strategic planning, development, and implementation of programs and ensuring quality services are rendered to low-income and homeless individuals, for homeless Veterans, and services for homeless children and veterans

Awards In the initial years of operations, information will disseminated about veterans project to the target population. Clients who are interested in participating in to moving towards economic independence will be enrolled in the program. We will work with them to create an individual training and services plan, and refer them to services based on their needs.

Within this time period the anticipated outcomes include: at least 80% of clients will achieve their goals and be employed or enrolled in an appropriate education program; at least 50% of clients will transition to economic independence within 24 months of enrollment in case-management services; and 100% of clients will enjoy enhanced access to needed services via referrals, case management, transportation and/or other assistance, as needed.

There are many reasons Veterans can become homeless, including poverty, lack of support from family or friends, substance use, or mental health challenges that may develop or worsen as a result of trauma they experience while serving. Veterans Project  is committed to meeting the needs of every Veteran. Comprehensive, individualized care including health care, housing assistance, job training, and education can help Veterans secure safe, stable housing and achieve self-sufficiency.

The 2014 Point-in-Time (PIT) count revealed that there were approximately 49,933 homeless Veterans on a single night in January 2014 in the United States.  For the Veterans Project, even one Veteran without safe and stable housing is one too many.and that is why veterans project was started to help Veterans who are homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

Approx. 33% of homeless males in the U.S. are veterans.2
Veterans are twice as likely as other Americans to become chronically homeless.2
Veterans represent 11% of the adult civilian population, but 26% of the homeless population, according to the Homeless Research Institute .

Veterans are more at risk of becoming homeless than non-veterans
The number of homeless Vietnam-era veterans, male and female, is greater than the number of soldiers who died during the war.1
Primary causes of homelessness among veterans are:
Lack of income due to limited education and lack of transferable skills from military to civilian life (especially true of younger veterans returning from Iraq and Afghanistan)
Combat-related physical health issues and disabilities
Combat-related mental health issues and disabilities
Substance abuse problems that interfere with job retention
Weak social networks due to problems adjusting to civilian life
Lack of services.3

Seven choices happy people make




Are you happy? When you ask that question, a lot of people answer with a focus on how they feel. They would love to be happy, but they think happiness is the product of emotions over which they have little or no control.



But that’s not true. Like everything you do in life, happiness is a choice, and people who are perpetually happy understand that there are things you can choose to do every day that will aid in your happiness. Thanks to some research from Clark, who pulled this list from BusinessInsider.com, here are seven things happy people choose to do:

1. They choose to exercise: There are many happy people who aren’t in great physical shape, so how does this make sense? The explanation is that you need only seven minutes of exercise a day if you’re exercising for the sake of happiness. That’s enough to make your body release endorphins, the neurotransmitters responsible for that famousrunners high.” They might not even call it exercise, but happy people find at least a small period of time each day to devote to moving around.

2. They choose to spend time outside: Just 20 minutes a day outside is enough to elevate your level of happiness. You can even combine this with choice No. 1 and take your short exercise break outside. A simple walk at lunch or even a little time in the backyard, on the patio, or at a nearby park makes the difference. They might not even realize its impact on their happiness, but happy people make it a point to get outdoors.



3. They choose to focus on their families: Three-quarters of Americans surveyed by the Pew Research Center in 2010 said that their family was the most important, most satisfying element of their lives,according to a U.S. News report on the study. So, bury the hatchet with your brother-in-law and focus on your parents, children, or siblings if you want to be happier. Happy people might not always want to, but they find at least a few minutes every day (often much more) to do things to improve their family relationships.

4. They choose to make time for friends: Friends are the family we choose for ourselves, and at least some small amount of social time with them every day is necessary if you want to improve happiness. Even just checking in with friends for a few minutes on the phone or a 10-minute conversation or activity together can make a difference. If you’re truly among the busiest people among us, merge this with choices Nos. 1 and 2, and exercise outside together. Happy people might not always have as much time as they’d like, but they find a way to interact with friends.

5. They choose to find meaning in their work: It’s uniquely American in that work satisfaction can make or break our happiness, but as an entrepreneur, you probably think about this choice all the time: Part of happiness comes from using your gifts and talents every day to make some kind of difference. Happy people might not have found their dream job or their true calling — heck, they might not love their work — but they find a way to put their daily tasks in perspective and to take pride and joy from what they do.

6. They choose to contribute to their communities: Being part of a community gives you a sense of belonging and helps improve your sense of self-worth, even as you work to define who you truly are. Thus, every day, truly happy people find a way to share something with their broader communities — going beyond their families and groups of close friends. Happy people might be involved with professional associations, church groups, athletic organizations, or something else, but they make sure to find some way to share with them every day.

7. They choose to get enough sleep: It’s true: Lack of sleep will ruin your life. If you don’t get enough shuteye, you’ll be more likely to be irritable, your judgment gets impaired, and your libido suffers, all of which affect your overall happiness. Happy people might be no less busy than the rest of us, but they squeeze something else out of their lives if necessary. They give up television watching, Internet surfing, or simply worrying about things they can’t affect — and they choose to get at least seven or eight hours of sleep every day.

I don’t mean to suggest that these seven steps represent the whole picture of happiness, but they are steps that happy people regularly take.

Oh, and one other thing: The next time someone ponders that secret of happiness, give them a clue: It’s not
a secret! We know what we need to do to be happy. We just have to make the choice to do it

Have you ever wondered why poor people are poor? It's not as though there aren't plenty of role models around. Millions of people live highly successful, productive lives in this country. So why don't people at the bottom of the income ladder copy the behavior of those several rungs above them and better their lot in life?

The chart below shows a hypothetical example whereby a family (single parent and two children) can receive nearly $30,000 in government benefits with no household earnings, but only about $10,000 in government benefits with $35,000 in household earnings.

So if the mother earns, say, $35,000 she loses about two-thirds of that amount in lost welfare benefits, and that's not even counting what the government will take in income and payroll taxes.

Steuerle's chart shows what incentives look like at a point in time. But activities today affect benefits tomorrow. For example, working and earning wages produces Social Security benefits and perhaps a private pension at the time of retirement. What do the incentives look like when we look at the lifetime effects of earning wages today?

That question was addressed in a study for the National Center for Policy Analysis by Jagadeesh Gokhale, Laurence J. Kotlikoff and Alexi Sluchynsky:http://www.ncpa.org/pub/st258

 The authors explicitly incorporate future Social Security benefits as well as current payroll taxes to calculate lifetime marginal tax rates. They conclude that:

Americans at every income level face a lifetime marginal net tax rate greater than 50 percent.

That is, for every dollar they earn, they will lose more than 50 cents in higher taxes and reduced transfer benefits.

Furthermore, the highest marginal net tax rates are not imposed on the highest-income families. They are imposed on those with the lowest earnings. For example:

At two times the minimum wage ($42,800), working couples get to keep less than 30 cents out of each dollar they earn.

At 1.5 times the minimum wage ($32,100), they get to keep less than 20 cents out of each dollar they earn.

By contrast, a couple earning $200,000 a year gets to keep 44 cents.

In a follow up study, Kotlikoff and coauthor David S. Rapson calculate the effects of working more hours for people at different income levels. They conclude that effective marginal tax rates are generally and substantially higher for lower-income households than for high-income households.http://www.ncpa.org/pub/st310

For 30-year-old couples earning $20,000 the marginal tax rate on an additional dollar earned is 42.5 percent; yet those earning $50,000 a year face a marginal tax rate of only 24.4 percent.

At age 45, couples earning $30,000 a year face a higher marginal tax rate (41.9 percent) than do those earning $200,000 a year (35.9 percent).

At age 60, couples earning $10,000 a year face a marginal tax rate of 50.9 percent, compared to a 43.2 percent marginal tax rate for those earning $200,000!

Moreover, single-parent households who qualify for more benefit programs than do couples face astonishingly high marginal tax rates beginning at lower incomes. For example:

At age 30, a single parent earning $10,000 a year faces a 72.3 percent marginal tax rate on an additional dollar earned due to their loss of welfare benefits; this rate is substantially higher than the 36.9 percent tax rate on the single parent earning $200,000.

At 45 years of age, a single parent earning $20,000 faces a marginal tax rate of 42.9 percent; higher than a single parent earning $200,000.

A 60-year-old single parent earning $10,000 a year faces a 50.9 percent marginal tax rate, while those earning $200,000 face a rate of 43.2 percent.

In the age when big government has displaced and replaced fathers, making traditional families obsolete by giving financial incentives in various forms of welfare to millions of out-of-wedlock mothers in head of household families, the idea of fatherhood programs and initiatives seems commendable.

According to the Pew Research Center, four in ten babies were born in 2008 to unwed women. Approximately 2.6 million households were led by single fathers in 2011, a sizable increase when compared to fewer than 300,000 in 1960. Twenty-three percent of single-household families were father-only families and 77 percent were mother-only families.


The Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development (OECD) which studied 27 industrialized countries found that 25.8 percent of children in the U.S. are raised by a single parent compared to 14.9 percent in other countries. Seventy-two percent of black children are raised in a single parent household.

The OECD reported public spending on child welfare and education in the U.S. to be $160,000, higher than the $149,000 expenditure in other countries, most spending occurring after the crucial early childhood years. The study indicated that “the United States is the only OECD country that does not have a national paid parental leave policy.” It is important to point out that all socialist countries have such a policy that is sometimes abused by parents who learn how to game the system.

Because in 2013 twenty-five percent of children under 18 lived in households run by their mothers, the federal, state, and local governments partnered with public and private organizations to develop programs to help noncustodial fathers be financially and personally responsible for their children, boosting involvement in their children’s lives.

Responsible fatherhood program

Responsible fatherhood programs are very important because research shows that children raised in single-parent families are more likely to do poorly in school, have emotional and behavioral problems, become teenage parents, and have poverty level incomes.http://www.fas.org/sgp/crs/misc/RL31025.pdf

Federal funding for responsible fatherhood programs comes from Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF), TANF state Maintenance-of-Effort (MOE), Child Support Enforcement (CSE), and Social Services Block Grant (Title XX).

Fifty million dollars per year in competitive grants to states, territories, Indian tribes, public and non-profit groups were included in the Deficit Reduction Act of 2005 for responsible fatherhood initiatives (2006-2010)


P.L. 111-291 (December 8, 2010) appropriated $75 million for healthy marriage promotion and $75 million for responsible fatherhood activities. Fatherhood programs promote the importance ofemotional, psychological, and financial connections of fathers to their children. The fatherhood programs include parenting education, responsible decision-making, mediation services for both parents, conflict resolution, coping with stress, problem solving skills, peer support, and job training activities such as skills development, interviewing skills, job search, job-retention skills, and job-advancement skills.(Carmen Solomon-Fears, Specialist in Social Policy, January 28, 2014)


Child Support Enforcement

Child Support Enforcement (CSE) funds are used to promote access and visitation rights for fathers. Both single mothers on welfare and the biological father are more likely to have dropped out of school, have little work experience, and are likely unable to find and/or keep a job.

Representative Nancy Johnson said that these fathers are “dead broke,” not “dead beats and the federal government “should help these noncustodial fathers meet their financial and emotional obligations to their children.” (House Ways and Means Subcommittee on Human Resources, Hearing on Fatherhood Legislation, Statement of Chairman Nancy Johnson, 106th Congress, 1st session, October 5, 1999, p. 4)

President George W. Bush’s Executive Office wrote in a “Blueprint for New Beginnings – A Responsible Budget for America’s Priorities” (February 28, 2001 in Chapter 12, p. 75), “While fathers must fulfill their financial commitments, they must also fulfill their emotional commitments. Dads play indispensable roles that cannot be measured in dollars and cents: nurturer, mentor, disciplinarian, moral instructor, and skills coach, among other roles.”

To make matters worse, some noncustodial fathers are incarcerated and, upon release, must re-enter the lives of their children but do not have the skills to cope with such a monumental undertaking, further negatively affecting the fragility of the family that needs healthy relationship skills training.

Women’s groups such as the National Organization for Women (NOW) and the National Women’s Law Center expressed concern that:


Single-mother families might be under-valued by the emphasis on the importance of the father.
Services for fathers would take away from services for mothers.
Fathers’ rights groups would get more leverage in child custody cases, child support, and visitation arrangements.
Solomon-Fears asks the following questions in a Congressional Research Service report:


Is the federal government promoting and supporting the father’s involvement in their children’s lives regardless of the father’s relationship with the mother?
What if the father has children by more than one woman?
What about incarcerated parents or those recently released from jail?

Federal government support for counseling, education, and supervised visitation for abusive fathers who may or may not want to reconnect with their children? (RL31025, p. 13)
The Child Support Enforcement (CSE) system has improved its collection of child support payments during 1978-2011 from $1 billion to $27.3 billion, located more parents, discovered paternities, and established child support orders.

Proponents of the CSE program additionally approve of the increased personal responsibility and welfare cost-avoidance.


Critics of the CSE program enumerate the nanny state, big brother compliance venues such as withholding licensure (professional, driver’s, recreational), passport revocation, seizure of bank accounts, retirement funds, lottery winnings, and automatic withholding from pay checks. The CSE program collects only 20 percent of child support obligations for which it has responsibility and only 57 percent of its caseload.

CSE program is based exclusively on financial support, critics say, alienating low-income fathers from their children when they cannot meet their child support payments. Such a narrow view of fatherhood, specialists say, devalues fathers and robs them of the role as “nurturer, disciplinarian, mentor, and moral instructor.” On the other hand, it is hard to be a disciplinarian or moral instructor to your child when you lack the moral compass to begin with or are in jail.

Noncustodial fathers from welfare supported families complain that the CSE program does not help their children because child support payments are used for welfare reimbursements to the federal government and the state. Mothers use the CSE program as a threat to report fathers to the CSE authorities, to take them back to court, to have more wages garnished, and to have them arrested.


The 1996 welfare reform law stated that marriage is the foundation of a successful society.” “Marriage is an essential institution of a successful society that promotes the interests of children. However, some child welfare advocates argue that marriage is not necessarily the best alternative for all women and their children, especially when taking into account an abusive father. (CRS report, Fatherhood Initiatives: Connecting Fathers to Their Children,” Carmen Solomon-Fears, p. 14)

Research found in 2011 that 72.11 percent of black births were to unmarried women and 29.1 percent of white births were to unmarried women. Based on this demographic, the researchers, Ronald B. Mincy and Chien-Chung Huang, from Bowling Green State University, thought it racially insensitive to devote five times as much money for marriage promotion as for responsible fatherhood promotion. Thus in 2011, P.L. 111-291 made the funding for responsible fatherhood grants equal to marriage promotion grants.

The federal government is trying to redress the disintegration of the American family, a problem it has created through generous welfare programs that have rewarded out-of-wedlock motherhood and replaced fathers. Many generations of welfare cases and a perennial poor underclass have been created, with no work ethic, no desire to succeed, no interest in education as a way out of poverty, and no personal responsibility.

“We have for many years lived with the knowledge that we, the masses, the working class, the poor, the white, the black, the brown, the immigrants, the Christians, the Muslims, the atheists, the soldiers/ex-soldiers, the peaceniks, the communists, the anarchists, the students, the people, across the spectrum, we all have a common cause”…We must learn to use our heart to see the world has one human family with no boundaries or color just human beings who need a hand of gently kindness and understanding with out any judgment only compassion and love to heals their wounds

Our lives begin to end the day we become silent about things that matter. —Martin Luther King Jr.


 Martin Luther King Jr., I am reminded of one aspect of him that is most compelling to me. Over and over, King warned us to refrain from keeping silent—to speak up when we encounter injustice. One of his most profound statements was: He who passively accepts evil is as much involved in it as he who helps to perpetrate it. He who accepts evil without protesting against it is really cooperating with it. King reminded us that we cannot merely sit back and watch injustice; we need to speak out and consciously push back against it.

All too often we complain about injustice and prejudice; we watch as the rights, history, and culture of others are trampled on or erased (take a look around, it’s happening now). Yet we say nothing and we do nothing. Sometimes, we refrain from speaking out because we assume that speaking out means protesting with signs or acts of civil disobedience. Speaking out can manifest in this way, but it can also happen through writing, through the way you live your life (being consistent in your values and actions), and by pointing out injustice in everyday situations when you see it.

Writing about the civil-rights era, King said, History will have to record that the greatest tragedy of this period of social transition was not the strident clamor of the bad people, but the appalling silence of the good people. I can’t help but think that his words are applicable today in our current political climate—a climate in which civility has been replaced by anger, hate, and atrocious deeds. In order to change the tone of the rhetoric of hate, we must speak up. We must stand up against injustice and for those who are being treated unjustly.

King urged us to feel passionate about freedom and justice, even calling upon us to give our life for what we believe in—much like he did. He said, A man who won’t die for something is not fit to live. Whether he met this in actuality does not matter to me. What he was saying is that when we feel strongly, we must act in the ways that we know how. We must use our strengths as individuals to make society better and we must act as the conscience of our nation.

Whenever I feel strongly about an issue but fear the idea of speaking out, I think of the words of King. He said In the End, we will remember not the words of our enemies, but the silence of our friends. These are simple words, but they are wonderfully profound in their message to all of us.
